Structural Integration (SI)

Structural Integration (SI) is a systematic approach for bringing balance and organization to the human body through soft tissue fascial manipulation.  A series of Structural Integration sessions aims to maximize length and balance along the central axis of the body to allow the client to find a better orientation with gravity in their daily life.  The 10-session SI series works through the entire body to organize and bring the body structure to a higher level of order.

Daily life and athletic movement, in particular, can be repetitive in motion. This is often a desired outcome for a particular motion or technique that may improve athletic performance. However, when fascia is stressed from injury, trauma, postural habits, or imbalanced repetitive sporting movements, it becomes short, dense, and dehydrated, gluing muscles together and inhibiting movement.  Shortened fascia compresses joints and puts stress on tendons and ligaments.  This compression and stress can result in injury and pain.

Fascia facilitates the many layers of muscles in our bodies to slide over each other, allowing for smooth uninhibited flexion and extension.  Healthy fascia is fluid, hydrated, pliable, flexible and responsive, allowing muscles, tendons and ligaments to move freely and easily. Structural Integration re-educates the body to live and move in harmony within the field of gravity instead of being in conflict with it, allowing you to feel supported, lighter and more energized.

“If you can imagine how it feels to have a fluid, light, balanced body, free of pain, stiffness and chronic stress, at ease with itself and the
earth’s gravitational field, then you will understand the goals of Structural Integration.” ~Ida P. Rolf, PhD

Structural Integration Benefits include:

  • Reduced stress and tension

  • Greater energy and sense of vitalite

  • Enhanced physical performance

  • Freedom from chronic pain and injuries

  • Improved athletic performance

  • Improved body awareness

  • Improved balance

  • Fuller and easier breathe

  • Increase flexibility, mobility, and fluidity of movement

  • Improved postural alignment and body shape

  • Greater empowerment and engagement in life

The 10-Session SI Series:

Dr. Ida P. Rolf developed the “10 Series” process of Structural Integration as a holistic system combining soft tissue manipulation and movement education to align the body in the field of gravity by lengthening, restoring, and reorganizing the vast connective tissue matrix of the body (fascia).

Dr. Rolf discovered that the body is organized in layers and in order to create lasting change, the SI Series must create length and space in the outermost layers before working with deeper, more core layers in the body. The first three sessions are “Sleeve” sessions and cover the superficial fascia.  The middle four sessions are “Core” sessions and involve the deeper myofascial structures of the body.   Finally, the last three sessions are “Integrative” and create structural and functional adaptability within the body as a whole.

  • Session 1: Increase airflow & ease of breath

  • Session 2: Builds a more stable and dynamic foundation for your entire body

  • Session 3: Extends the lateral line of your body

  • Session 4: Extends the center line of your body

  • Session 5: Continues where session 4 left off, extending the medial line of your body.

  • Session 6: Extends and balances the lower end of your spine.

  • Session 7: Balances your head on top of the spine

  • Session 8: Balances the whole lower segment of the body

  • Session 9: Balances the whole upper segment of the body.

  • Session 10: Integrates the previous work by balancing your entire body

“Structural Integration is about the whole person. It is about fascia and feeling. The sensation of moving from weakness into strength.” ~Emmet Hutchins

What to expect in a session:

Integration Athletics (IA) was created by a passionate husband & wife team of sport enthusiasts who have over 30 years of combined elite sport performance and movement education expertise.  We believe all bodies were created to move through life with intention, integrity, and ease.  We authentically and skillfully contribute to an expanding community of people willing to live their best version of themselves.

  • Sessions generally last between 90 – 120 minutes
  • Unlike traditional massage techniques, there are typically no oils used
  • Sessions can be somewhat “interactive” in that client movements are often utilized
  • loose fitting / athletic clothing is preferred – SI is not a “skin-to-win” type of bodywork
